Capital Gains Calculator

Type what you bought and sold for, and see your gain, your tax, and your net proceeds.

Tax rates, allowances, and rules differ by place, and some places tax gains at a lower rate than income or exempt part of the gain. Type in the rate that applies to you. The result is an estimate, not tax advice.

Enter a buy price, a sell price, and a number of units.

How it works

Sale proceeds are the sell price times the number of units. Cost is the buy price times the number of units, plus any costs and fees. The gain is proceeds minus cost. If the gain is positive, tax is the gain times your rate. Net proceeds are the sale proceeds minus the tax. If you sold at a loss, there is no tax to pay on that sale, so net proceeds are just the sale proceeds.

FAQ

What counts as a cost here?

Anything you paid to buy or sell, such as broker fees or transfer charges. Type the total in the costs and fees box and it comes off the gain before tax.

What if I sold at a loss?

Then the gain is negative, no tax is due on that sale, and the tool shows the loss instead of a gain. Some places let you use a loss against gains from other sales, but that depends on local rules.

Is the whole sale amount taxed?

No. Only the gain is taxed, not the full sale proceeds. The buy price and the fees come off first, and the rate applies to what is left.
