VAT and Sales Tax Calculator
Add tax to a price, or take tax out of a price that already has it.
Tax rates and rules differ by place, so type in the rate that applies to you. The result is an estimate, not tax advice.
How it works
To add tax, the tax amount is the price times the rate, and the total is the price plus that amount. To remove tax, the price already has tax in it, so the pre-tax price is the price divided by one plus the rate, and the tax part is the difference between the two. For example, a price of 100 with 20% tax added gives 20 tax and 120 total. A price of 120 with 20% tax in it breaks down to 100 before tax and 20 tax.

FAQ
What is the difference between adding and removing tax?
Adding tax starts from a price with no tax in it and puts tax on top. Removing tax starts from a price that already has tax in it and splits it into the pre-tax price and the tax part.
Why is the tax part not just 20% of 120?
Because 20% of 120 is 24, but the tax was worked out on the pre-tax price of 100, where 20% is 20. Removing tax divides by one plus the rate instead of taking a straight percent of the total.
Does this cover every kind of sales tax?
No. VAT, GST, and sales tax all work a bit differently by place, and some goods have reduced or zero rates. Type in the rate that applies to your case and treat the result as an estimate.
